Gordon Cooper Technology Center graduation ceremonies begin at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 23 at the Expo Center people building.

Space flight anniversary

GCTC staff and students are remembering the legacy of Mercury astronaut and Shawnee area native Col. L. Gordon Cooper. Fifty years ago on May 15, 1963 Cooper was launched into space and into history.

Hall of Fame induction ceremony

A Gordon Cooper Technology Center Education Foundation Hall of Fame induction ceremony is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, May 16 at the seminar center. The public is invited.

Medals earned

Gordon Cooper Technology Center competing in the recent state SkillsUSA competition n Tulsa left with eight gold medals, eight silver medals, and five bronze medals.

Robotics world championship

The Gordon Cooper Technology Center Pre-Engineering Academy FIRST Robotics Team 2341 competed in the FIRST Robotics World Championship round in St. Louis. Our “Green Beast” robot finished 21st in the Galileo Division.

SkillsUSA state contest

Gordon Cooper Technology Center students in competition for state SkillsUSA honors in Tulsa April 21-23 left with eight gold medals, eight silver medals, and five bronze medals. Congratulations!

Robotics team advances, wins awards

Team 2341 took the “Green Beast” robot to the Oklahoma City regional competition at the Cox Convention Center recently and emerged as a finalist qualified for the FIRST Championship competition in St. Louis later this month. This is the third year the team has qualified for the international championship round.

Family Promise project

Student members of the Gordon Cooper Technology Center chapter of SkillsUSA along with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts were busy Saturday working on a community service project for Family Promise.

FIRST Robotics team on to championships

Sprockets 2341 won the Engineering Inspiration Award (which includes a paid registration to the Championship), a Hard Hat Safety Award and was a finalist in the robotics competition. The students also received $10000 in scholarship money to the Oklahoma State University College of Engineering for being in the final rounds of the robotics competition. Preston Warden was named one of only two Dean's List Finalists.

Buford White, President and CEO of White’s Ace Building Center recently presented the 23rd annual Golden Hammer Award to the top Gordon Cooper Technology Center carpentry student, Leah Holloway, home school student from Chandler. Also, Gordon Cooper Technology Center Electrical Careers instructor Darrell Frerichs presented the Electrical Careers Technology Achievement Award to Wellston High School senior Sage Space during a recent GCTC awards assembly.

Pesticide disposal day planned

Farmers and ranchers who have old or unwanted pesticides will soon be able to safely dispose of them, with no questions asked. The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry will hold an Unwanted Pesticide Collection event at the Pontotoc County Fair Grounds in Ada on November 15.

GCTC is hosting a Career Safari Summer Camp June 7-10 for ages 11-14. The camp runs from 8:15 a.m. to noon each day. Courses are offered at both the main campus in Shawnee and at the Seminole Campus.

Eleven students graduated from the GCTC evening Practical Nursing program the evening of Dec. 3.

The students and staff of GCTC recently collected and donated more than 400 cans of food to the Salvation Army.
